Urgent appeal for foster care - 15/11 

Dear Members & Supporters,
We (that is MIAO) have got a bit of a problem with Grace, one of the mothers of the 13 Platsa pups. We've booked her in for an eye operation & sterilising this coming Friday morning (16/11) as we had someone who said they could foster her for about 10 days while she recovers from the operations. Unfortunately they now say they are unavailable! Grace is a small Breton Spaniel type dog. She is a very calm, friendly dog and is good with cats. She is used to sleeping outside & a kennel can be provided. She just needs care and containment whilst recovering from the ops. We have just got a new, safe, very secure location for her pups, who are now weaned. Accordingly, we are very keen to have her eye operated on ASAP in order that further complications do not set in.  Can you, or can you think of anyone, who may be able to foster Grace for about 10 days? Obviously all food, etc., will be provided.  I attach some pictures of her.

Urgent appeal for homes: Two female dogs have been abandoned locally, both with puppies. One is a Breton spaniel with 7 pups - 5 male, 2 female the other is a Pointer with 6 pups. They are beautiful dogs and we are hoping to find homes for all of them once the puppies are old enough. Please contact MIAO if you are interesting in adopting one or perhaps recognise the females. Warning to dog owners - March 2018

WARNING!!! Poisoned meat has been found on the path from Pantazi to Pigi, close to the village. A hiker found pieces of raw meat with some blue substance in it, and next to one piece a dead jackal. Dogwalkers, be careful. In case of poisoning you have to react within minutes, so it might be an idea to carry a rescue kit with you. Ask your vet about it, please!
ACHTUNG!!! Auf dem Pfad von Pantazi nach Pigi sind Giftköder gefunden worden, nahe der Ortschft. Ein Wanderer fand rohe Fleischstücke mit einer blauen Substanz darin, und neben einem Köder einen toten Schakal. Wer mit seinem Hund in dieser Gegend spazieren geht, sollte besonders aufpassen. Im Falle einer Vergiftung muss man innerhalb von Minuten reagieren, daher empfehlen wir, immer ein Rettungskit dabei zu haben. Fragt bitte euren Tierarzt danach!

Warning to dog owners - February 2018

Two little dogs from our area came recently in contact with the so called Processionary Caterpillars.  Vet Kostas Antonopoulos had to amputate parts of their tongues. We want to inform you about these dangerous insects and want to give you advice of what to do when your dog (or cat) licks or eats one of these caterpillars. Our vet Kostas recommends to give the steroid MEDROL,  1mg per kilogram of body weight as a first aid measure, when you see an acute allergic reaction caused by these caterpillars. The following three or four days the dog should get half the dose of the steroid. Vet Kostas stresses the importance of contacting your vet because not all dogs react well to steroids and because there could be a million other reasons why your dog should be treated individually and maybe with a different drug.  Kostas Antonopoulos does not know any cases of cats that had to be treated against the allergic reactions from Processionary Caterpillars.  

Kürzlich sind bei uns zwei kleine Hunde in Kontakt mit den sogenannten Prozessionsspinnner-Raupen gekommen. Daraufhin musste Tierarzt Kostas Antonopoulos Teile ihrer Zungen amputieren. Wir möchten deshalb auf diese Gefahr aufmerksam machen und euch so präzise wie möglich informieren, natürlich auch darüber, wie ihr als Hundebesitzer (oder Katzenbesitzer) am besten reagiert. 
Unser Tierarzt Kostas empfiehlt die Gabe des Steroids MEDROL in der Dosierung 1mg pro Kilogramm Körpergewicht als erste Hilfsmaßnahme, wenn man eine von den Raupen hervorgerufene akute allergische Reaktion bemerkt, gefolgt von der Hälfte der Dosierung an den folgenden drei bis vier Tagen. Er rät aber auch DRINGEND dazu, dass man seinen Tierarzt kontaktieren soll, da nicht alle Hunde Steroide vertragen und es noch eine Menge anderer Gründe dafür gibt, warum der eine oder andere Hund eventuell anders behandelt werden sollte. 
Kostas Antonopoulos sind keine Fälle bekannt, in denen Katzen in Berührung mit der Raupe gekommen sind und behandelt werden mussten. 

The following report has been published in Spain, but it is equally relevant for our Mediterranean region.  A warning to dog owners: If you live in the Mediterranean region or visit during the spring time, you might have heard people talking about the processionary caterpillar. This creature is often mentioned in forums by dog owners who have seen them out on their walks and are warning others of the danger. It’s a real threat too. We don’t usually associate caterpillars with the potential to kill, but these creatures have caused the death of many dogs and other animals and have made their presence felt amongst their adult owners too.
What are they?
The pine processionary moth flies around May to July and only lives for about one day during which time it must mate and lay its eggs in the foliage of a pine tree.  A single female can lay up to 300 tiny eggs and it takes around a month for them to hatch.
Once they have hatched, the minute caterpillars have five growth stages called ‘instars’. During their third moult or instar they build the white cotton-wool like nest and continue to feed on the pine leaves until the fifth instar. This usually happens any time from February to April.
At this point, the caterpillars make their way to the ground in a long chain searching for the next place in their life cycle. This behaviour gives them the name of the ‘processionary caterpillar’. You can recognise them by their distinctive orange-brown colour and blue bands.
Eventually they will disperse to burrow just below the ground where they will pupate. Before this happens they can be a danger to humans and other mammals. It is the hairs of the caterpillars that can cause problems. If they are touched or poked they cause a nasty rash and give off dust that can cause respiratory problems. They are particularly toxic for children and animals.
If the caterpillar is stressed or threatened it can eject its hairs which act a little like harpoons and can penetrate or irritate any exposed skin. Dogs are particularly susceptible as they will pick up the hairs on their paws and then lick them as they start to itch. This then leads to the hairs being transferred on to the animal’s tongue and can result in itching, swelling, vomiting and even death.
If your pet is infected you can usually tell because there will be small white spots in the mouth and on the tongue and the animal will become distressed and possibly drool. If they remain untreated, animals can die as the tongue will swell and in some cases has to be cut or amputated.  If you know your pet has been affected then you should go to the vets immediately, where they will probably be given a cortisone injection.

Warnung vor der Raupe: Gefahr für Hunde

Bei dem Schädling handelt es sich um einen Schuppenflügler (Thaumatopea pytocampa), der aufgrund seiner eigenartigen Verhaltensweise im Raupenstadium auch "Prozessionsspinner" genannt wird und im gesamten Mittelmeerraum verbreitet ist. Gegen Ende des Sommers verlässt der Schmetterling den in der Erde vergrabenen Kokon und das Weibchen legt seine verkapselten Eier in den Nadeln von Kiefernbäumen ab.
Nach zirka vier Wochen entwickeln sich aus den Eiern die Raupen, die weitere fünf Entwicklungsphasen durchlaufen, bevor sie die typischen, wie Wattebäusche aussehenden Nester bauen, in denen sich bis zu 200 Raupen befinden.
Während dieser Zeit verlassen die Insekten die Nester, mit denen sie durch einen Faden verbunden sind, nur kurz zur Nahrungsaufnahme (Kiefernnadeln) in der näheren Umgebung. Die Tierchen sind schwarzgelb gestreift, zirka drei Zentimeter lang und von winzigen braunen Härchen überzogen. Ein leichter Temperaturanstieg im Frühjahr - bei uns zwischen Februar und April - gibt den biologischen Reiz zur Verpuppung, die in der Erde stattfindet.
Alle Raupen eines Nests machen sich auf den Weg zur Erde, angeführt durch ein Weibchen und untereinander durch einen Faden verbunden. Diese "Prozessionen", in denen bis zu 200 Tiere hintereinander von ihrem Ast in der Kiefer bis zu einer geeigneten Stelle auf dem Boden wandern, haben dem Insekt den Namen gegeben. Dieses Naturspektakel ist es auch, was die Aufmerksamkeit unserer Hunde - seltener der Katzen - auf sich zieht.
Die Gefahr lauert in den Haaren des Insekts. Diese enthalten ein Gift (Thaumatopein), das bei Berührung mit der Haut oder Schleimhaut eine heftige allergische Reaktion des Opfers hervorruft. Dabei sind die Raupen in der Lage, bei Gefahr ihre Haare abzuwerfen, die sofort brechen und ihr Gift freigeben.
Diese Eigentümlichkeit erklärt auch, wieso Schaden entstehen kann, ohne dass Raupen gesichtet wurden. Sind Nester in der Nähe oder herrscht zur Raupenzeit starker Wind, können überall in der Nähe von Kiefernwäldern Raupenhärchen verweht werden und allergische Entzündungsreaktionen bei Mensch und Tier hervorrufen. Der Geschädigte entwickelt an der Kontaktstelle schmerzhafte, brennende und juckende Schwellungen.
Beim Menschen ist meistens die Haut, seltener die Hornhaut der Augen, betroffen. Bei Katzen kann der ganze Kopf befallen sein, da die Tiere durch ihren Putztrieb die Haare oft über das ganze Gesicht verteilen. Beim Hund findet die Berührung in der Regel in der Maulhöhle oder im Lefzenbereich statt.
Die Krankheitszeichen sind abhängig von Dauer und Intensität des Kontakts mit dem Gift. Innerhalb einer Stunde können schwerwiegende Schwellungen, insbesondere der Zunge, auftreten. Das Tier speichelt und hat Schmerzen. Nicht selten ist die Entzündung von Fieber, Atemnot und Krämpfen begleitet.
Eine derartige allergische Reaktion kann sogar zum Tode führen. Häufiger aber kommt es vor, dass das betroffene entzündete Gewebe, vor allem an Zunge und Lefze, langsam abstirbt. Innerhalb von Tagen oder Wochen verlieren diese Tiere ganze Haut- oder Zungenteile. Eine tierärztliche Behandlung sollte rasch erfolgen, um diese dramatischen Folgen zu verhindern. Raupenhaare sollten so schnell wie möglich mit warmem Wasser abgespült (und keinesfalls eingerieben) werden.
Vorbeugend sollte man Kiefernwälder im Frühjahr meiden. Auch Spaziergänge bei windigem Wetter im weiteren Umkreis von befallenen Kiefern können riskant sein. Niemals sollte man eine Raupenprozession ohne entsprechende Schutzkleidung stören oder entfernen.
